Stromboli volcano eruptions:
Persistant (near-constant) activity since at least 2-3000 years. Most recent effusive (lava flow) eruptions from Dec. 2002-July 2003, March 2007, Aug-Oct 2014.
Typical eruption style:
Small explosive (strombolian) eruptions, typically every 20-30 mins. Intermittently, ca. every 2-20 years, minor effusive eruptions (lava flows); on average 2-5 times per year larger explosions.

Eruption updates & news from Stromboli:

Stromboli volcano (Eolian Islands, Italy): activity decreases a bit, but explosions remain frequent

Saturday Jun 17, 2017 16:31 PM | BY: T

Moderate strombolian eruption from the main eastern vent (N2) of Stromboli on 16 June 2017
Moderate strombolian eruption from the main eastern vent (N2) of Stromboli on 16 June 2017
When observed yesterday, the activity of the volcano seemed to have decreased a bit compared to earlier in the week, although explosions continued to occur very frequently, at rates of one every few minutes, mainly from the eastern and western vents.
During 16 June, 6 vents in total were found active (s. attached image and crater map of earlier update): two in the western crater area (left in picture, S1, S2), two adjacent vents (C) in the central (southern) part and the large cone-shaped vents (right in picture, N1, N2 with eruption) that compose the eastern crater.
Most activity occurred from the eastern main vent N2, which had strombolian explosions of small to moderate size at intervals of 5-10 minutes, but with only rare ejections higher than 150 m. Ash-rich eruptions of varying size continued to occur from the easternmost vent (N1).
The central vents showed continuous glow and occasional spattering, as well as occasional (one every 1-2 hrs) small strombolian eruptions.
The activity at the main western vent (S1) had changed from very strong and "clean", i.e. lava-rich, often narrow vertical jets to ash-rich ejections with much less energy than those observed a few days ago. Candle-shaped strombolian eruptions of 50-100 m height as well as loud degassing jets were sometimes occurring from the narrow S2 vent in the northern corner of the western crater.
