Lewotolo (Lesser Sunda Islands): The alert level of the volcano was raised yesterday from from Level I (Normal) to Level II (Alert), the Indonesian volcano monitoring agency PVMBG reported. Over the past weeks, degassing and seismic activity have increased significantly, suggesting a greater likelihood of a new eruption, most likely in the form of sudden explosions from the summit crater. During the last week of September, a steam plume of varying intensity has been observed rising up to 500 m from the crater, and volcanic earthquakes detected under the volcano have increased from averages of a few per day to several tens per day. An exclusion zone of 2 km radius around the crater is recommended.
Agung (Bali): The situation of the volcano remains unchanged and continues to be critical: based on available monitoring data, the volcano could (but not necessarily will) erupt at any time with little further precursors. Seismic activity remains very high, if not increased further with now sometimes more than 1000 quakes per day detected, including hundreds of shallow volcanic events. It also seems that degassing at the crater has increased. Although nobody can predict whether an eruption will actually occur and if so when, the restrictions to keep out of the volcano in a large radius should remain in place. Approaching (or climbing) the mountain under current circumstances is nothing else than Russian roulette only a fool not caring about his or her life would do.
Ethiopia and the Danakil: Ethiopia is a very diverse and beautiful country. Thanks to our numerous expeditions to Erta Ale and Dallol and beyond, we have an extensive collection of images showing the volcano's lava lake, the desert, the colorful hot springs of Dallol, the vast salt lakes, camel caravans and more.
Latest quakes in Greece: Greece has a lot of earthquake activity, but most of them occur around the margin of the Aegean microplate. The Cycladic islands are located in its center and therefore seismically comparably quiet.
Dukono volcano photos: Dukono on Halmahera in Indonesia has been in permanent activity for years, often producing ash plumes that drift around the northern part of the island and have become normality.
